What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?
Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is defined as follows:
Recognition of prior learning is an assessment process that involves assessment of an individuals relevant prior learning (including formal, informal and non-formal learning) to determine the credit outcomes of an individual application for credit.Credit is the value assigned for the recognition of equivalence in content and learning outcomes between different types of learning and/or qualifications. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to achieve a qualification and may be through credit transfer, articulation, recognition of prior learning or advanced standing.
RPL assessment methods used by the Australian Adult Learning Institute:
These might include:
At the Australian Adult Learning Institute, we believe that all experience is important, however not all experience can be directly related to every qualification.
You are able to view all the skills, knowledge and experience required for all units within all qualifications, by visiting www.training.gov.au, selecting National Register of VET, then type the unit code you would like to search (eg BSBINN301) into the Nationally recognised training field, and then select Search. Select the unit that appears as Current. The screen that follows will provide you with all the skills, knowledge and experience that is required for this unit. As part of the RPL assessment you will be required to provide evidence that ensures that you meet all of the requirements for:
This may reduce the duration of time to complete your qualification. Credit Transfer You may also apply for a credit transfer. Credit transfer occurs when you already hold a relevant unit/s of competency from another Registered Training Organisation (RTO), and would like to use the unit/s of competency already achieved towards the credit for a qualification. Credit transfer can only occur when the unit/s are mapped across, and are equivalent to the current unit/s for credit being sought. You are required to provide certified documentation for this to occur. If you believe that you are a suitable candidate for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Credit Transfer, please indicate this when completing your enrolment form within the field that refers to RPL.
All assessments are conducted in accordance with the following standards: Principles of Assessment Fairness The individual learner’s needs are considered in the assessment process.Where appropriate, reasonable adjustments are applied by the RTO to take into account the individual learner’s needs. The RTO informs the learner about the assessment process, and provides the learner with the opportunity to challenge the result of the assessment and be reassessed if necessary.Flexibility Assessment is flexible to the individual learner by:
Validity Any assessment decision of the RTO is justified, based on the evidence of performance of the individual learner.Validity requires:
Reliability Evidence presented for assessment is consistently interpreted and assessment results are comparable irrespective of the assessor conducting the assessment.
Rules of Evidence Validity The assessor is assured that the learner has the skills, knowledge and attributes as described in the module or unit of competency and associated assessment requirements. Sufficiency The assessor is assured that the quality, quantity and relevance of the assessment evidence enables a judgement to be made of a learner’s competency. Authenticity The assessor is assured that the evidence presented for assessment is the learner’s own work. Currency The assessor is assured that the assessment evidence demonstrates current competency. This requires the assessment evidence to be from the present or the very recent past.Accomplish your course goals faster if you
